The potential of food wastes to create new opportunities and markets has been under-estimated until the very recent years. Indeed, the term “Food Waste Recovery” was not in use, whereas the term recovery was used to underline the prospect of reutilizing or valorising food waste somehow. This term was established by the Special Interest Group 5 (SIG5) of ISEKI Food Association more than 3 years ago. It was used as an abbreviation for the vision of “extraction of valuable compounds from wasted by-products”.
SIG5 is the biggest network worldwide in the field of food waste recovery. It has more than 500 subscribers (from >60 countries) of its Webinar Series and >1200 members in its Linkedin Group, whereas it has developed numerous teaching (webinars, workshop, book), learning (e-learning course) and research activities (special issue, research articles, joint proposals for funding etc).

The SIG is aimed to:
- Create an expert network to fill in the gap between academics, research institutes and food industry in terms of high added-value compounds recovery from agricultural by-products and food wastes
- Provide training activities on the several aspects of food waste recovery
- Exchange ideas, methodologies, scale up and commercialization experiences from the source to the final product
- Implement education and research that can lead to the potential exploitation of food wastes and agricultural by-products as a nutraceuticals resource
- Develop and coordinate common research activities and programs in the frame of food waste valorization and corresponding bioproducts processing
- Organizing webinars, seminars & e-learning coarse
- Organizing collaborations & common publications
- Submitting applications in joint calls (COST ACTION, Horizon 2020 etc)
- Registered users would be able to participate in moderated discussion forums after login
